eVintage Tag - Color My World

Time for the eVintage Blog Tag and I was tagged by Julie from Damn Good Vintage . This week's theme is Color!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR?
If you are a regular reader you already know that - Green! All shades of green. Also aqua and blue-greens.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BRIGHTLY COLOURED PIECE IN YOUR INVENTORY?
Neither is green and neither is actually bright, but I love the colors on both. First, I think the color combo on the Brown nylon nightgown with the pink and bright aqua stripes is really cool. Then the pale aqua-blue slip by Aristocraft is very pretty, especially with the slight darker embroidery on the lace trims.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO ADD COLOUR TO AN OUTFIT?
If I'm wearing all black, I'll put on a sweater that is colorful or carry a colorful purse.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOUR TO WEAR?
Black. Because it's easy, and sometimes I'm lazy when I'm trying to decide what to wear.

WHAT COLOUR ARE YOU WEARING RIGHT NOW?
Black t-shirt and jeans, both from Old Navy. I know, no vintage!

WHAT COLOURS DO YOU DECORATE WITH?
Green! I also like the green with light pink and yellow. Kind of shabby vintage style, with a little bit of gold and black Oriental accents thrown in here and there.

Now follow the tag over to Lizzie's Vintage Travel Journal

The Gemstone of the Great White North: Labradorite

If there were such a thing as a "winter" gemstone, it would be labradorite. I cannot see the blue flash without thinking of the Northern lights, fjords, and thinking of lands I read about in fairy tales with Hans and Gerda and the Snow Queen. Labradorite is one of the most evocative gemstones I work with.
The bracelet is new, and it has some wonderful flash to it - even where it doesn't show up in the picture. Every single labradorite stone on the bracelet, no matter how small, I chose for its blue flash, and the large smooth oval is simply amazing! Both pairs of earrings also have major flash - some of the best labradorite I've ever had.
Although I love jewelry, I work with gemstones everyday, and tend to get a bit blase about some - which is good because I am able to part with the jewelry I make (otherwise I'd have to build a new room onto my house just to hold the jewelry). But labradorite still gives me pause, so that I find myself sliding stones across my desk and later making something for myself from them (something I rarely do otherwise). There is magic in labradorite, and I love wearing magic.Labradorite Jewelry can be found on these pages on our website: Labradorite Jewelry Labradorite Earrings and Labradorite Necklaces.

I think everyone...

...needs to enter this contest. Seriously. There may or may not be a prize, but you will win the world's respect/annoyance.

Isn’t Blingier Better?

DiamondAccording to this article on AOL, sparklier diamonds are often actually fakes (especially with a rainbow sparkle). And then I think, “then give me the fake!” What I want especially out of my engagement ring (or any diamond) someday is such a brilliant cut, etc., that it's as sparkley as can be. So why is genuine always better?

Can an inspired BAG be better than the higher priced originals? I once though I liked my Birkin-style bag from Wilson's Leather because it had shoulder straps (like the JPG Shoulder Birkin) but now I think, “eww, long straps!” (To be fair, they weren't, like, down at my hip long or anything!) So maybe the experts always know what's best for us, even if we do not? I mean, higher quality (if it exists in higher price - but that's another entry) usually means longer life. Diamonds may NOT be “forever” but they can cut up a mean amount of things, while remaining in tact. While I want my true love to be gentler than that, I want our feelings toward each other to be just as tough to trials and time. Genuine diamonds DO kind of give that statement.

Of course, they also give the statement, “I don't care who's blood shed for your diamond, honey, I love you so much, I just care about you having your selfish bling!”

What says love like the uncaring of all others, huh? ;-)

I snark, I snark. Seriously, what do you think?

Stay tuned, for in a few days I'll feature some obviously fake, but totally fun, bling. (I promise, for I made such a ring myself, and how can I resist the publicity?)

But I must say do not neglect the necklaces, I love that edgy metal look around my neck… As does Nicolette Sheridan and Brooke Burke who have both been seen sporting the Twisted Silver neck wear.

We love colors! (The tights)

With winter coming, tights are all the rage right now. So I figured I'd tell you about the best place to get tights. It's a site called We Love Colors and its sells a wide, and very wacky selection of tights.

So first for your basic tights lover, we've got the solids. In 45 COLORS!!! Yes, Seriously. Here is their color chart:

Solid Colors

Solid Tights

We Love Colors Solid Tights come in 45 colors and up to a size 4X, which they say should fit a woman around 330 pounds and at least 6 feet tall. Did I mention they cost the extremely reasonable amount of $9 a pair???? I would recommend picking up a pair, or maybe 40! Seriously, even the fabulous Torrid couldn't revival the funk-a-tude of turquoise or hot pink tights!

We Love Colors FishnetsBut that's not all! We Love Colors also sells Fishnets! Their fishnets also come in all 45 colors, but they only come in a standard "1-3X" (one size). This says it will fit up to about 48 inch hips. That means that me and my wide hips might just have to say a prayer to squeeze into them, but there are plenty of plus girls with hips that will fit!

Splash Color TightsBlack Stripe Tights
For you wacky tights lovers, try the Splash Color tights, which come in 11 different patterns, in sizes up to 4X, and cost $12. Or go for the Black Striped Tights which come in 44 color combos, and are available in either 1/2X or 2/3X, also for $12.

Treat your inner doll

Shhh, don't tell anyone, but I have an inner Barbie, and this bag from Bulga totally brings it out!

There is something about the crackled vintage looking purple patent leather, retro shape, and gold turn lock that makes me want to don a pair of white knee high boots (on my beautifully arched feet), and a polyester mini dress, and take off in my corvette, dream van, or maybe my vacation trailer with my genderless but perfectly coiffed boyfriend.
Seriously, as most readers by now know, I am not one given to fits of frivolity...unless it involves shiny purple things.
The Bulga BNK bag doesn't go with everything, and is not for everyone. It is also a bag that once you wear it, everyone will know you as the girl with the big purple bag...but you won't see yourself coming and going!
You can get one from Kitson for $595 and indulge your inner Barbie to something frivolous today!

...

Due to a death in my boyfriend's family, blogging will resume on Monday.
Love love love,
Winona

It all starts here 9

Note: I'll be out of the office Wed-Fri. I'm traipsing off to Yale to give my talk on Thursday.

It's getting to be that time again. Spring. Time to plant the cotton. If you recall from the last two years running, I follow the cotton crop from the field that lies halfway between my office and the house. As I was driving by yesterday, I saw the field was recently plowed. What's more, it was being irrigated.

If you know anything about agriculture, you know that if a field is being irrigated, Mr. Farmer is near by. While watering is largely a passive activity, it requires minding. So, I looked around to see if I could finally score an interview with my local cotton farmer. As luck would have it, there were two.

Going Green with St. Patrick’s Day Lingerie

Cette Dublin Opaque TightsMaybe you don't always think about underwear on St. Patrick's Day. You might be one of those people who only wears green on St. Patrick's Day to avoid getting pinched by the creepy guy in the cubicle next to yours. Unfortunately, green underwear does you no good because he can't see it and he still wants to pinch you, so in order to stop him from pinching you, you'd have to show him your underwear and (to him) that beats pinching you any day of the week.

It's estimated that 95% of non-Irish Americans pretend to be Irish on St. Patrick's day. If you're going to do it right, you'll need some Guinness (or Irish Whiskey) some green clothes and definitely some green underwear. Your alternative is to paint your body green and go to work naked and we both know you're not that Irish.

With that in mind, here are 5 suggestions for what to wear under there this St. Patrick's Day...

1) Cette Dublin Opaque tights (above). Here's something you can actually wear that will keep the creepy guy from pinching you while at the same time avoiding the problem of showing him your underwear. Don't tell me I never did anything for you. They have a matte finish and they'll keep you warm. You can't really get a more Irish name for a pair of tights, either.

Elle MacPherson Echo Contour Bra2) Elle MacPherson Echo Contour Bra. This is one of those things that you definitely don't want to show the creepy guy, unless you're into teasing the creepy guy in which case you deserve the creepy guy. It has graduated padding for a natural curvy look and the combination of dark green paisley and chartreuse makes for an elegant look on any day of the year. There's also a matching string thong (you've gotta match) and an underwire bra (in case you need a little more support).

Scanty Peace Sleep Boxers3) Scanty Peace Sleep Boxers. For something a little more fun, these comfortable cotton boxers are better than a pot of gold. They're green (bonus) and they're covered with peace signs. I'll admit that they'd be much better if they were covered in shamrocks or leprecauns (hint for next year, Scanty). The waistband contains the Scanty logo and the front is fastened via “flirty” buttons. They're really no different than regular buttons - some people just find buttons flirty in general. Unlike the model shown here, you are allowed to wear a bra with them, though. Just don't sleep in the bra.

Leigh Bantivoglio Claudia Soiree Jacket4 ) Leigh Bantivoglio Claudia Soiree Jacket. If you're looking to step out for an evening on the town this St. Patrick's Day, then try out the this 100% silk jacket from Leigh Bantivoglio. Now, it's technically sleepwear, but it's awfully elegant and certainly suitable for a night out. I know, you've been told by a certain husband and wife team of lingerie bloggers not to wear your pajamas to the nightclub, but there are exceptions to every rule. It has delicate floral lace details along the edges and a lovely silk self tie ribbon that makes for a fitted silhouette.

CIN2 Juniper Green army trunk5 ) C-In2 Juniper Green Lo No Show Army Trunk. This one's for the guys. This army trunk from C-In2 is made of super soft ribbed cotton. It features a profile enhancing contour pouch (that means it makes his “junk” look bigger) and it's ideal for low rise jeans.

While Christmas and Valentine's Day are the biggest “lingerie holidays”, we're all about spicing things up all the time. In fact, we wish there were more green choices for St. Patrick's Day. For now though, these choices will have to do.

Tourmaline: The Stone with Mixed Colours

If I get any busier I'm going to have to clone myself! Nevertheless, I decided it was time to update the blog and try to get a few things on the website. Some time ago I bought quite a few tourmaline strands; some of them turned out to be very pretty. Pretty tourmaline can be difficult to find in bead form. How I wish I'd bought strands and strands of it when I was in India! But now I have to try to search and search like everyone else. I saw great tourmaline when I was in India; appropriate, since Sri Lanki gave tourmaline its name and (tur mali in Sinhalese) the Dutch East India Company (headquartered in Madras where I spent most of my time; Sri Lanka is right off the coast) brought tourmalines back to Europe. Nowadays, tourmaline comes from Brazil (deep blue-green paraiba tourmaline is prized), Namibia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Tourmaline is even found in the USA.

What I love about tourmalines is what they are known for - their many colours, even within a single crystal. One old legend has it that in coming up from the earth, the tourmaline somehow passed over an underground rainbow and absorbed its varied colours.
Many people are fond of pink tourmaline, and it has been accepted as an alternate birthstone for the month of October (usual birthstone is the opal). I like to use all the colours of tourmaline together in one piece of jewelry. This works for me because, first, it is rare to get enough perfect tourmaline in one colour for a piece of jewelry, and second, because I like the way the colours blend together. I particularly like clear olive, pink, and yellow tourmaline. And these three shades are wonderful together. The jewelry on this page is representative of the tourmalines I get: the top pair of tourmaline earrings illustrate the different colours of green and pink; the second pair, here in the last picture, show blends of pink although without the green that makes "watermelon" tourmaline - very popular recently. The tourmaline necklace above has colours of tourmalines ranging from black to watermelon to green to pink and all shades in between. Tourmaline jewelry is also very useful in the jewelry wardrobe since it can go with so many different clothes.
